A Quick Look At Preceptorship In Nursing

Becoming a BSN Nurse isn’t only a means of making more money than you currently make. It’s also a path to finding fulfillment in the workplace for men. BSNs have an incredible impact in the lives of the patients that they help. And allow the doctors that they work with to complete the work secure with the knowledge that the patients are being well-cared for; even when the doctors themselves can’t be around. A qualified nurse is a highly paid professional whose role in the health care sector is very important.

Preceptorship is based on the mentor concept used traditionally in industry and business. Historically, mentorship was the formal and informal relationship that developed between a successful, older, established individual and a younger one. The established person would counsel and support the younger one, assisting him or her to advance in a given business or professional career.

Mentorship has been common in the business community for many decades, but the application of this concept to the health care field is fairly recent. Preceptorship differs somewhat from mentorship in that a shorter period of time is involved and the purpose of the relationship is rather specific.

Preceptorship has existed in nursing education since the 1960s. It was first introduced in programs preparing primary health care practitioners. At that time physician preceptors were utilized for a clinical practicum involving extensive physical assessment skills. Today, many of the formal programs involving preceptorships are in elective baccalaureate level programs. The preceptor is generally a nurse from a specialty area, rather than a physician, and the focus is on skills in nursing process and interpersonal relations as well as those of physical assessment.

Good Nursing Schools

There are so many good nursing schools out there that it is difficult to make a recommendation of one particular school to another. Your path to becoming a professional nurse would become uniquely yours unlike anyone else. With that said, there are a number of considerations that you can think about when looking for a nursing school.

First, you need to look at your scheduling needs. A busy single parent with a full-time job may benefit from time and schedule freedom provided by an online BSN nursing program. If you’re a high school graduate, you may need the structure and support of a traditional day program. As a nurse professional, nurses carry a noble profession which they should be proud of.
